Launching on Hauntboard? You don't need a tagged link for us: every visit link on Hauntboard already adds ref=hauntboard, utm_source=hauntboard and utm_medium=referral, and keeps any tags your link already has.

What UTM Parameters Are

UTM parameters are tags you add to the end of a link. When someone clicks it, your analytics reads the tags and files the visit under the source you chose, instead of guessing.

ParameterWhat it meansExample
utm_sourceWhere the click came fromreddit
utm_mediumThe kind of channelsocial
utm_campaignWhich effort it belongs tolaunch
utm_contentWhich link, when there are several in one placebio
utm_termA keyword, mostly for paid searchinvoice-app

Why Launches Need Them

A lot of launch traffic arrives without a referrer: mobile apps, privacy browsers and some platforms strip it. That traffic shows up as “Direct”, and you can't tell whether your Reddit post or your Show HN sent it. A tagged link fixes that, because the source travels in the link itself. Our guide to tracking where launch traffic comes from covers the full setup for Plausible, Google Analytics, Umami and PostHog.

How Google Analytics Groups Them

The mediums in this tool match Google Analytics 4's default channel groups, so your launch traffic lands in a sensible place:

  • social shows under Organic Social (X, Reddit, LinkedIn).
  • referral shows under Referral (launch boards, Hacker News, communities).
  • email shows under Email (your newsletter, outreach).

A Few Rules That Save Headaches

  • Keep values lowercase and consistent. Decide on “x” or “twitter” once, and stick to it.
  • Don't tag links between your own pages. A tag on an internal link overwrites where the visitor really came from.
  • Keep a list of the links you shared, so you can compare channels a week later.

Common questions

Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
Not when your pages have a canonical tag. Search engines treat the tagged URL as a duplicate of the canonical page, so sharing tagged links doesn't create competing pages.
Are UTM values case-sensitive?
Yes. In Google Analytics, "Reddit" and "reddit" show up as two different sources. That's why this tool lowercases values by default.
Do I need a tagged link for my Hauntboard launch?
No. Every visit link on Hauntboard already adds ref=hauntboard, utm_source=hauntboard and utm_medium=referral. If your link already has its own tags, Hauntboard keeps them.
Can I shorten a UTM link?
Yes. A link shortener redirects to the full URL, tags included, so your analytics still sees them.
What's the difference between ref and utm_source?
utm_source is the standard that Google Analytics and most tools read. ref is an older, informal convention that some tools, such as Plausible, also read as a source. Adding both does no harm.
